Knowing Jesus
God tells us, “You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). How do we even know WHO to seek, much less HOW?
We start with Scripture: “There is none good, there is not even one” (Psalm 14:3; Romans 3:12). The Bible tells us this several times, but we insist that all people are basically good. Are we good? To be “good” is to be “morally excellent.” But the Bible says “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) and that “They have all turned aside” (Romans 3:12); “Each of us has turned to his own way” (Isaiah 53:6). Let’s take a quick quiz to see if we are good…have you ever stolen anything or lied (Exodus 20:15-16)? Have you ever murdered someone (Exodus 20:13-14)? Many people think, “No! I have never killed anyone!” But Jesus tells us that “Everyone who is angry [without a cause] with his brother shall be guilty” as if they had committed murder because of their motives. This short test shows that we have all sinned, just as the Bible tells us, and so we are not good at heart, because, “Out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false witness, slanders” (Matthew 15:19). All these things earn for us “The wages of sin” which “is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). There is our only hope – the free gift of God’s grace, salvation from sin through Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9 If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, leading to righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, leading to salvation.
Romans 10:13 Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. The Bible tells us that to be saved we must “Repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). How can you do this? By God’s grace, you can turn away from your sin and confess it to God and believe that Jesus has died and been raised again to save you from your sin.
