Heaven’s Horses

Providence – this term identifies the Supremacy of God. We belong, by Divine Providence, to the Almighty, Living, and True God who is the Sovereign Lord and Creator of all things. He exists as One Being in Three Persons – the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, indivisible in essence yet distinct in personalities. In His infinite power and wisdom, He upholds, directs, disposes and governs all creatures and things, from the greatest to the least, by His most wise and holy providence, to the end for which they were created, according to His own will and for His good pleasure. As the providence of God in general reaches to all creatures, so, in a more special manner, it takes care of His church, and governs all things to the good of His chosen people.

We will learn about the providential power of God in the final night vision of Zechariah. In his eighth vision he sees two massive bronze mountains. Suddenly from between these mountains burst forth four chariots, each chariot with different colored horses pulling them. One chariot had black horses, another had white horses, a third had red horses, and the last had dappled colored horses.

The chariots with black horses and white horses are sent to the north country, into Babylonia, where the Assyrians, Babylonians, and then Persians ruled and persecuted the people of God. The chariot with dappled horses is sent to the south, into Egypt, also an antagonist to Judah.

As the interpreting angel explains the vision to the prophet we see with him that these chariots are angels sent into the world to bring about God’s will among the nations. We learn from Revelation 6 that black horses bring famine and economic turmoil, white horses bring aggression and conquest, red horses bring bloodshed and war, and pale horses bring pestilence and death. Through these circumstances and events God’s agents bring to pass His will regarding the nations of the world.

Here specifically we see these angels bringing judgment and destruction to the nations who had been persecuting His people. Vengeance is His, and He is seen here repaying those who have injured His possession, the nation of Judah.

We learn through this vision that no matter how strong, numerous, or influential the world becomes and no matter how weak, small, or insignificant the Church may seem, God will overcome the enemies of His people. As one commentator stated, the world may have might, money, and media, but the Church has the Spirit of God. Supernaturally, through the ministry of His mighty angels, He will control the destiny of people and nations. And He will protect and preserve His people.

Join us this Sunday, September 11, as we examine Zechariah’s eighth vision, quite timely in revealing the sovereignty and providence of God in the affairs of the nations of the world. Our message is titled “Heaven’s Horses” from Zechariah 6:1-8.
